Paycheck advance apps allow users to borrow a small amount of their earnings typically for a small amount, and then pay it back at the time of their next payday.
It's an appealing option if you're looking for extra cash between paychecks and millions of people have accepted it. While it's possible to use these without harming your finances, some advocates believe they can create the series of loans.
If you're thinking of using an app to borrow This is what you should know prior to downloading.
Fees framed as tips
Many cash advance apps require users to provide a gratuity when they ask for money. An app may limit tips to a percent of the amount borrowed , or allow users to tip up to a few dollars.
Earnin is a cash-advance app that accepts tips. The CEO Ram Palaniappan says tips let the user decide what the value of the service is to them rather than charging a fee they might not be able.
Some advances come with extra charges. Dave Paycheck Advance, a different application, charges three fees including a $1 monthly subscription fee, an express fee to make your money more quickly along with an extra tip.
For just a few hundred dollars -- which is the maximum amount you can borrow from many apps charges aren't as high as most payday loans or overdraft fees.
But asking the user to determine the amount they will pay won't provide them with an opportunity to assess the total cost of borrowing in the way the display of the annual rate of interest could be, according to Marisabel Torres, former director of California policy at the Center for Responsible Lending who is now vice president for JPMorgan Chase.
"Not calling it a cost and making it appear as a tip, it's really misleading to the customer because the amount this product really costs is confused," she says.

The risks: the risk of overdrafts and chronic borrowing
To sign up for an app for cash advances, the users typically have to provide evidence of their pay schedule and income, and often access to their bank accounts so the app can take out the cash they owe after they get paid.
Certain apps state that they'll check your account at the banks and try to avoid a debit if your balance isn't enough. A balance that's low could result in an overdraft penalty -- a fee certain apps advertise in the form of a substitute for- and you could need to take out a loan again.
It's not clear yet how often app usage triggers an overdraft penalty, says Alex Horowitz, principal officer of The Pew Charitable Trusts.
A report in 2021 by the Financial Health Network found more than 70% of consumers who utilized a service to gain access to their earnings in the early hours went on to use the service again -- behavior that's common for payday loans, he says.
"It's not you're having to use it several times throughout the year, it's that they're using it multiple times over a period of time," Horowitz says. "That means they won't be able to repay it without taking a second advance shortly after to cover their bills."
Not a long-term solution
You may have cheaper when you need to take out a loan, Torres says.
Credit unions and some banks provide small-dollar loans that are repaid in manageable monthly installments. A family member or friend could be able lend you money, and allow you to repay it in time.
There's no enough evidence to know if getting an advance via an app can make customers better off in the long run, claims Nakita Cuttino, an associate law professor in Georgetown University whose research focuses on financial services and inclusion.
If they're used to solve an emergency situation that is only temporary, Cuttino says, an advance can be more affordable and easier to use -- and lowers the risk of overborrowing because of their low sums of money.
If you do borrow from these apps, consider how it will impact your budget and make an arrangement to repay it, she says. If you're returning to borrow each month or paying regular overdraft charges this might not be the right choice for you.
